Hey! You should know that Canon has released a newer version of this product: the Canon VIXIA HF R80.
The Canon R70 nearly identical to the R72 except that it has about half the memory, with 16 GBs for 75 minutes of recording at full resolution without adding a memory card. Of course, that lower memory capacity also puts it at a lower price point.
The VIXIA line is a basic consumer line, but competes well for the price. The Canon R70 offers a 32x optical zoom (57x hybrid optical/digital zoom) with a 1/4.8" sensor. The footage is a nice 1080p at 60 fps. The bit rate is on the lower end but still solid at 28 Mbps. Optical image stabilization is included as well.
Canon includes a few nice usability features as well. The camera can record in multiple formats simultaneously, if you ever need more than one format anyways. Wi-fi is also included, which allows a smartphone to become a remote control and opens up possibilities for using the camcorder for security or as a baby monitor, though you'd want to plug it in. There's also a baby mode that adds details about your child's age automatically. The biggest change over the older R60 is an expanded battery life, but Canon hasn't said just how much more the R70 can record.
Overall, the R70 looks to be a solid option for the price. We wish Canon would make some bigger improvements than just battery life, but it still competes well against other mainstream camcorders.
