An older model that's still offered by a few retailers, the Sony CX160 was one of our favorites when first released. Here's what we had to say about it in 2011:

The CX160 is one of Sony's entry-level high-def camcorders, and one of the best affordable HD camcorders out there. The video quality is simply excellent. It captures 1080i AVCHD-format video (which can play back at 1080p) and 3-megapixel stills. The Exmor R CMOS sensor should give it a leg up in low-light situations, and the 30x optical zoom (plus optical image stabilization) will prove to be be very versatile. For about $500, this is a solid deal from one of the most consistent names in mainstream camcorders. Also check out the CX130, which records exclusively to cards (no built-in memory), or the XR160, which records to a 160GB hard drive.
