Standard-Def Mainstream Camcorders

Standard-def mainstream camcorders are still popular with consumers, despite the prevalence of high-def everything these days. These video cameras offer a solid bang for the buck, usually packing huge zoom ranges, some built-in memory (which goes a long way thanks to the lower-res video) as well as a slot for an SD or SDHC card, and reasonable prices. They're horizontally oriented, light, and comfortable to hold for long periods of time, and most also include some form of image stabilization these days. Folks who plan to use the maximum telephoto capability might want to invest in a tripod or some other stabilization device. Users who don't own an HDTV, or who simply aren't as concerned about video quality, would do pretty well looking at the camcorders below.
